A 16-year-old boy from Vermilion, Ohio, has suffered some bleeding on his brain after being hit by a drunk driver Tuesday evening, authorities said. His mother said he has been groggy, and doctors consider his brain trauma their foremost concern.

Police said the boy was walking with a friend when a van ran off the side of the road and hit him. The van hit several other objects before coming to a stop, authorities said. As of Wednesday, the boy was listed in fair condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His mother said that in addition to the brain injury, the boy had some scrapes and bruises, and a steel rod had been installed in his broken femur.

Officials in New Jersey have proposed new rules regarding the treatment and prevention of concussions for high school athletes in the state. The proposed rules are expected to be approved in April, in time for the state’s “Brain Injury Awareness Month”.

New Jersey may soon toughen the rules regarding high school athletes who have suffered from concussions.

Proposed new regulations would require all high school athletes who have suffered from a concussion to get a doctor’s approval before they are allowed to return to their sports. The new regulations come about amid increasing concern over student athletes who face serious head injuries repeatedly throughout their high school sports careers. The rules will be discussed next month by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.

One of the country’s top snowboarders, Kevin Pearce, has been forced to spend the Winter Olympics watching the games from his room in a brain-injury facility following a serious accident in January. Pearce was at one time considered to be one of the front-runners for Olympic gold and top challenger to current champion Shaun White. A serious accident on the half-pipe on New Year’s Eve left Pearce in a coma for weeks, and he has only recently begun to re-learn how to walk and talk.
